Mazzochi Issues Plea for New Donors for Start of Summer Blood Drive

State Rep. Deanne Mazzochi Hosting Much Needed Blood Drive June 3rd

Aiming to get ahead of the anticipated summer blood shortage, State Representative Deanne Mazzochi (R-Elmhurst) is partnering with Versiti to host a blood drive on Friday, June 3rd from 10a.m.- 4p.m.

Summer is a particularly challenging time for blood centers because blood donations drop and need from hospitals rises. To help counter this, Rep. Mazzochi is making a plea to get first time donors. “Of course this donation drive is asking for any and all donors to step up, but I really want to encourage those who haven’t donated before to give it a try this time,” Rep. Mazzochi said.

“It’s critical that as many people who can donate, do.” Only about 38 percent of the population can donate and less than 10 percent of those eligible actually do, meaning the pool of able and willing donors is incredibly small.

“It’s very easy and so vital, but I understand that people have their concerns.” According to donation centers, the amount of new donors they see have significantly declined over the past two years. The donation process takes less than an hour and only about 10 minutes is needed for the donation itself. For first time donors, it’s recommended that you hydrate and have a healthy meal before donating. To show that blood donors rock, Versiti will be giving out Bluetooth speakers to donors while supplies last.

The donation drive will take place at the Westmont Centre in Westmont. Walk-ins are welcome, but to save time making an appointment is strongly preferred. Interested blood donors can make an appointment to donate by visiting RepMazzochi.com or by contacting Rep. Mazzochi’s office at (630) 852-8633.
