ELMHURST, IL — In mid-October, Patch reported Elmhurst Hospital's coronavirus patient number fell to five, the lowest in three months.

The story led off with this sentence, "We've been here before: The number of coronavirus patients plunges at Elmhurst Hospital, only to rise at some point later."

That point has returned.

On Tuesday, the hospital said it had 28 coronavirus patients, the most since Sept. 2, when the number was 29. Of the current patients, 22 were unvaccinated and four were vaccinated. Information was unavailable for the other two.

The hospital's high was 84 on Nov. 17, 2020.

As of Monday, the hospital had seen 210 deaths from the coronavirus, an increase of 10 since mid-October, according to hospital statistics.

The hospital serves an area far greater than Elmhurst, but the city's increase in cases is instructive. The week before last, Elmhurst experienced 124 new coronavirus cases, the highest weekly total since early January. In the last week, the number dropped to 76, a big decrease but still among the highest totals this year.
