ELMHURST, IL – Many may remember that house on South York Street in Elmhurst with more than 50 campaign signs earlier this year.

The house is owned by Laura Vevers, who is running for Ward 6 alderman against Guido Nardini in the April 4 election.

It appears just about all the signs were for Republicans, many of them running for DuPage County Board.

On Tuesday, Patch obtained a photo of the yard full of signs. One of the signs is prompting criticism.

It was for Art Jones, a candidate for Congress in the 6th District. His sign read, "Time to put America first."

The sign included the symbol of an elephant, indicating he was running as a Republican. But he was an independent write-in candidate, ultimately getting only a dozen votes.

In 2018, in the 3rd Congressional District, Jones drew nearly 60,000 votes, or 26 percent, losing to a Democrat Daniel Lipinski.

Before that election, the Illinois Republican Party repudiated Jones, calling him a Nazi. He is a Holocaust denier who has said he was a former leader in the American Nazi Party.

In 2018, Jones told Politico that he was running against a "two-party, Jew-party, queer-party system."

On Tuesday, Patch asked Vevers through Facebook about the sign.

In response, she wrote, "Who took the picture, was it the person who planted the sign? I don't know or SUPPORT Art Jones or his philosophy."

Asked further about the sign, she said, "The fact is, someone put the sign in my yard without my consent."

Vevers and Nardini are vying for the seat held by Alderman Mike Honquest, who decided against running after a decade on the City Council.

Ward 6 is in Elmhurst's southeastern corner. Emily Bastedo is the other Ward 6 alderman.
