EWIM President, Roy King, has a number of barbecue competitions under his belt, and encourages enthusiasts to give it a try. “Everyone thinks their ribs are the best. Now’s your chance to find out how good they are and to be crowned winner of the bet ribs in Elmhurst,” said King.
A panel of six judges will include both barbecue experts including Jack Island of Silverado Grill and Jim Lawshe of Barbecue Jim’s as well as amateur tasters, including Mayor Steve Morley. They will award prizes for best ribs and best sauce. The public will also be able to vote on their choice of best sauce.

The day will offer plenty for non-competitors as well. They will be able to buy pulled pork and brisket sandwiches from Barbeque Jim’s, as well as beer and other food items. Live music acts will perform throughout the day including Cary Kanno, the School of Rock and Who’s this Mary. Teams can sign up to participate in a bags tournament, and children will enjoy a moon jump, face painting, a magician and the School of Rock’s instrument petting zoo.
EWIM serves Elmhurst residents, families with children in Elmhurst schools, or Elmhurst church members by providing emergency financial assistance. Services include help with rent and utilities, car repair, gas vouchers and access to the IC food pantry. It also provides snacks to children on free lunch in Elmhurst schools and offers a wide variety of resources to help clients find jobs or get access to computer or ELL classes. It is open Monday to Friday from ten to noon and is located in the lower level of St. Peters Church at 125 W. Church St.
