110 Heat Index, 'Oppressive' Heat For Chicago Area

Heat advisories and excessive heat warnings are in effect for Thursday and Friday.

ILLINOIS — Heat index values of 110 degrees are possible on Thursday and Friday, as heat advisories and excessive heat warnings are issued for most of the Chicago area.

According to the National Weather Service, the high is 96 for Thursday and 97 on Friday, but winds will keep it cooler near the lake. Away from the lake, however, it will be very hot and humid.

A heat advisory has been issued for southern Cook, northern and eastern Will, DuPage, McHenry, DeKalb and Kendall counties until 9 p.m. Friday. Peak afternoon heat index values could reach 107 degrees, the weather service said.

An excessive heat warning is in effect for areas south of Chicago, including southern Will, Grundy and Kankakee counties. Peak afternoon heat index values around 110 degrees are possible.

Thunderstorms could provide possible relief from the heat on Friday, the weather service said.

The weather service advised drinking plenty of fluids, staying in air conditioning, out of the sun, and to check on relatives and neighbors. Young children and pets should also never be left in vehicles.

Signs of heat exhaustion include dizziness, thirst, heavy sweating, nausea and weakness, the weather service said. Signs of heat stroke include confusion, dizziness and becoming unconscious.
