Riverside Drive in southwestern Elmhurst is without sidewalks or curbs, a rarity in town.
In north Elmhurst, many residents call for sidewalks. Most of them are younger and argue that sidewalks would be safer for children.
Older residents often argue the opposite. They note the decades they have lived in such neighborhoods and that they have survived without sidewalks.
Such divisions can be seen in other towns, including Western Springs.
Elmhurst is now considering a mandate for newly built homes to have sidewalks.
