Separating Art from the Artist: #MeToo and the Music Industry
Co-hosts of WBEZ's 'Sound Opinions' come to Elmhurst College March 10.

Elmhurst College and Elmhurst Public Library present a free event on Tuesday, March 10 at 7 p.m. in Hammerschmidt Memorial Chapel, tackling a challenging and timely question: Can we separate art from the artist?
#MeToo has shined a spotlight on sexual misconduct in Hollywood, the media, and politics, where powerful men have fallen rapidly. But the music world has lagged behind. Jim DeRogatis and Greg Kot, hosts of Sound Opinions, a syndicated radio talk show and podcast based in Chicago, explore questions about the responsibility we bear for enjoying—or failing to speak about—troubling themes in an artist’s work. If we sing along to Michael Jackson or R. Kelly, are we muting those who accuse them of abuse and assault? Can we really separate the art from the artist? Should we?
