Skimming Device, Safe In Creek: Elmhurst Cops
An electronic tracking device was found on a local ATM, police said.

ELMHURST, IL – In the last few days, Elmhurst police handled calls involving an ATM skimming device, a safe in a creek, heroin possession, a keyed car, a broken window and identity thefts, among other offenses. Here is information from the latest Elmhurst police reports:
Skimming device
- An ATM service technician reported finding an electronic skimming device attached to the side of a machine Sunday inside CVS Pharmacy, 110 W. North. The skimmer used a radio frequency to collect data on a memory card. The skimmer was placed into evidence.
Safe in creek

- An officer responded to a report of a safe in Salt Creek about 2:30 p.m. Thursday. The safe was recovered and had been left open. Google Maps indicated the safe was in the creek at least since September 2021.
Barefoot and no jacket
- A person was seen walking barefoot and with no jacket along the street about 9 a.m. Sunday at Vallette and York. The person was considered special needs and was unable to provide a home address. An officer contacted the person's mother. The mother notified the person's caregiver, who then arrived to take the person home.
Vape pen at school

- The resource officer at York High School, 355 W. St. Charles Road, informed a school dean that a student was in possession of a nicotine vape pen about 11:30 a.m. Thursday. The student was cited with possession of tobacco by a minor.
Car keyed
- The passenger side of a car was damaged with a key between Feb. 23 and March 3 in the 200 block of North Addison.
Converter thefts
- A catalytic converter was stolen between midnight and 7:30 a.m. Friday from a car parked overnight in the 500 block of West St. Charles Road. A neighbor heard a loud noise shortly after midnight and saw two men speeding away in an SUV. Another converter was stolen between 6 p.m. Thursday and 5:30 a.m. Friday in the 300 block of South West.
Crypto infection
- Glenrock Co., 200 W. Wrightwood, told police Friday that someone infected its computer server with a crypto virus. The suspect demanded payment in bitcoin. The business did not make the payment.
Identity theft
- A resident in the 700 block of South Spring Road told police Thursday that someone hacked her Chase account, causing it to be overdrawn. The hacking occurred between Dec. 21 and March 9. The resident said Chase wanted a police report to investigate it further.
- A resident in the 300 block of Argyle told police Saturday that someone made several unauthorized transactions involving the resident's checking and savings accounts at Chase Bank. The suspect also tried to open bank accounts using the victims' personal information.
Broken window
- An officer noticed a broke passenger side window shortly before noon Saturday in the 300 block of South Route 83. The owner was contacted. Nothing appeared to be missing from the vehicle.
Heroin possession
- Police were called about a suspicious person about 10 p.m. Saturday at Schiller and Pine. The person was found to be in possession of heroin. The suspect was struggling to answer questions. Medics arrived and took the person to the hospital. Charges are pending.
Suspicious car
- Police investigated the suspicious circumstances of a car about 11 p.m. Saturday near Kohl's, 303 S. Route 83. Officers found cocaine residue and seized contraband, but made no arrests.
Drug possession
- Anthony Knight, 47, of Berkeley, was arrested about 7 p.m. Sunday in the 100 block of Fairlane on charges of possession of a controlled substance and criminal trespass to real property. He was taken to the DuPage County Jail.
Driving violations
- Monica Zavala, 25, of Montgomery, was arrested at 2:30 a.m. Saturday at Kenilworth and North on charges of DUI and improperly stopping on the roadway. In the same stop, Rafaeliel Hernandez, 25, of Montgomery, was arrested on a warrant. Both were released on bond.
- Endrick Flores-Garcia, 21, of Chicago, was cited about 10 p.m. Saturday at Myrtle and North on charges of driving with a suspended license, speeding and suspended registration. He was released on bond.
- Ovidio Garcia-Juarez, 26, of Bensenville, was cited at 4 p.m. Sunday at York and Industrial on charges of no valid driver's license, speeding and marijuana possession. He was released on bond.
