Students Partner with Northern Illinois Food Bank to Combat Hunger for September’s Hunger Action Month
Elmhurst Academy students partake in food drive to fight hunger in the community and learn about adversity
Elmhurst Academy partnered with Northern Illinois Food Bank in effort to combat hunger in the community, as part of September’s Hunger Action Month. Throughout the month, the school posted numerous food collection bins around their campus for students, parents, and teachers to donate items for the food drive. This eye-opening experience, that helped the school collect over 200 pounds of canned goods, provided students with the opportunity to learn more about the world at large.
Northern Illinois Food Bank is a world-impacting, innovative feeding program that helps more than 71,000 people each week. As a long-standing philanthropic partner of the organization, Elmhurst Academy strives to give back to the community through September's food drive and teach its students about service and outreach. On Monday, September 26 and Tuesday, September 27, 2016, Elmhurst Academy completed the drive by donating its 200 pounds of collected food items to the organization.
Lakeview's Kindergarten class spent these days loading the food into Northern Illinois Food Bank truck that was later delivered to those in need. With the help of NIFB driver, Koren Buckley, the students learned more about the importance of their hands-on participation, as well as gained more understanding about the adversity that many face. Expanding their perspective of the world, their assistance in the food drive allowed them to realize the direct impact they were making on children and families within the community.
