Suspect Crashes Twice In Elmhurst, Found In Stolen Car: Cops

The man, who was driving drunk, ran away from officers before being caught, police said.

ELMHURST, IL – In the last few days, Elmhurst police handled cases involving stolen cars, road rage, fugitive electric bike riders, retail theft, resisting an officer and obstructing identification. Here is information from the latest Elmhurst police reports:

Stolen cars

  • Edwin Aponte Jr., 28, of Bensenville, was arrested about 9 p.m. Monday after he was accused of being involved in two crashes – one at St. Charles Road and Route 83 and the other at North Avenue and Route 83. The man ran away from police, but they found him in the 500 block of West North Avenue. Police said they saw him holding a bottle of Jack Daniel's whiskey and wearing a backpack containing electronics, two still with store security sensors. He had been driving a 2015 Ford 500 that had been stolen in Bensenville, police said. His blood-alcohol level was reported at .16, more than twice the legal limit. He was charged with possession of a stolen car, DUI, driving an uninsured car, theft, obstructing an officer, leaving the scene of a crash, transportation of open alcohol, disobeying a traffic signal, failing to reduce speed to avoid a crash and illegal stopping on a road. He was taken to the DuPage County Jail.
  • Justin Quigley, 34, of Chicago, was arrested Wednesday on charges of possession of a stolen vehicle and theft. A man told officers that his 2013 silver Kia Rio was stolen between 3 p.m. and 7 p.m. Sunday at York Meadows Condominiums, 841 N. York St., police said. Police found Quigley and took him to the DuPage County Jail. Also arrested was a 25-year-old Chicago woman on a charge of trespass to a vehicle. She was released.

  • An 18-year-old Elmhurst man who lives in the 600 block of South Spring Road was arrested about 7 p.m. Monday on charges of disorderly conduct, following too closely and having an obstructed windshield. Police said a road rage incident occurred at Mitchell Avenue and Madison Street. The man was released.

Fugitive e-bike riders

  • Police were told about people riding electric dirt bikes about 4 p.m. Sunday on the top level of the parking deck at Addison Avenue and Third Street. An officer saw the suspects headed north. When the officer tried to stop them, they fled, last seen going west on the south sidewalk of North Avenue.

Retail theft

  • A 58-year-old man and a 53-year-old woman, both of Bensenville, were arrested about 5 p.m. Tuesday at Kohl's, 303 S. Route 83, on retail theft charges. They were released.

Aggravated resisting an officer

  • Fabian J. Duenas, 34, of Streamwood, was arrested about 9:30 p.m. Wednesday at Interstate 290 and North Avenue on charges of aggravated resisting a police officer causing injury, unlawful possession of a controlled substance (two counts) and driving with a revoked license. Police said an officer found Duenas' vehicle, which was involved in a reported felony in Streamwood. He was taken to the DuPage County Jail.

Obstructing identification

  • A 20-year-old Westchester man walked into the police station about 9 p.m. Monday, reported a crash and handed an officer another person's identification. The man was then arrested on charges of obstructing identification, driving an uninsured car and failing to reduce speed to avoid a crash. He was released.
