Virginia Knuepfer, 95, of Elmhurst, Active Volunteer

Virginia “Dinny” Knuepfer, an active Elmhurst volunteer and member of several boards through her years, passed away Feb. 9 at the age of 95.

Knuepfer was born Jan. 2, 1920, according to the Ahlgrim Funeral Home website. She served as a member of the Board of Trustees of the Conservation Foundation from 1995 to 2001. She was congratulated by a formal resolution of the House of Representatives of the 92nd General Assembly of Illinois for her service, according to the Illinois General Assembly archives.

This service included overseeing the preservation of more than 1,000 acres of open space in DuPage, Kane, Kendall and Will counties, according to the resolution. Knuepfer also oversaw the passage of $215 million in open space bonds for DuPage, Kane and Will counties.

Knuepfer served on the DuPage Referendum Committee in 1997. She was an active member of the Elmhurst Garden Club and the Ray Graham Association. She served on the board of the Elmhurst Art Museum, the Metro YWCA and Community Nursing, according to the resolution.

She organized a group of women to design head coverings for women with cancer, a project known as Crowning Glory.

Knuepfer had five children and 14 grandchildren. She was the proud great-grandmother of five and a beloved family member to many more.

Kneupfer was a founding member of the Elmhurst Presbyterian Church, where a memorial visitation will take place at 10 a.m. March 14, according to the Ahlgrim Funeral Home website. The church is located at 367 South Spring Road, Elmhurst.

A memorial service will begin at 11 a.m., following the visitation.
