Which Businesses Does Elmhurst Need?
Readers weigh in on the stores and restaurants they would like to see come to town.
ELMHURST, IL — The other day, Elmhurst Patch asked on Facebook about which businesses you would like to see come to town. Dozens of comments came in. Apparently, people have a lot of ideas about this.
Here's what our readers said:
- A woman said she would like to see a Mexican restaurant like Tortilla Flats, which has closed. Others agreed. "That was a fun place to go," one said. Another woman said she wanted a "sit-down Mexican restaurant with great margaritas."
- Sticking with the south-of-the-border theme, two residents said they wanted a high-end Mexican restaurant like Cafe Las Bellas, which used to be in town. "Cafe Las Bellas is a big reason why we moved to Elmhurst in the first place. My husband and I ate there and said, 'See dining in the burbs isn't so bad. If we can eat here, we'll be fine.' We celebrated closing on our house, and they boarded up a month later."
- Another reader is pining for a "small family-owned doughnut shop with unique varieties" such as "fruity pebbles, mint, Twix, etc... They're common in other parts of the country." But she has one rule: It cannot be overpriced.
- One man was apparently going for sarcasm, saying Elmhurst needs "either a bank or another parking garage. We don't have enough of either. Maybe a new workout place."
- Any ideas about what can go in the old Meatheads, which closed suddenly last month? A reader suggested a Noodles & Co. or Einstein Bros. Bagels. Another reader wasn't having Noodles, saying it would be "very, very bad. I'll put on like 20 lbs."
- Residents suggested restaurants with ethnic food — Korean, Indian, Thai, Vietnamese, Japanese, Ethiopian.
- A craft beer store, one man suggested. "Tired of going to Binny's in Oak Brook. Something similar to the Beer Cellar in Glen Ellyn." Another person reminded him about Sal's Beverage World in Elmhurst.
- Speaking up for herbivores, a woman recommended a vegan-vegetarian restaurant that makes non-meat versions of regular food items such as gyros, tacos, etc. "These are popular in other areas of the country," she said.
- Politics is never far from the mind. One man skipped the idea of new businesses and went right to government, asking for a "good city council for starters."
- Several people suggested having a Marcel's Culinary Experience, which is in Glen Ellyn. It features cooking classes and everything for the kitchen, they said.
- Other suggestions: Trader Joe's, TJ Maxx, Marshall's, Beggars Pizza, Hobby Lobby, Meijer, Rita's Italian Rice, Raising Cane's Chicken Fingers.
