York Falls to Hinsdale Central 4-0

Dukes allow three second-period goals during injury-plagued game.

York junior goalkeeper Keith Pierzchala threw his gloves to the ground after allowing Hinsdale Central their fourth goal in York's 4-0 loss Tuesday at York.

His frustration over the shutout was echoed by head coach Markus Roy.

"They capitalized on their chances and obviously we didn't," Roy said. "It was closer than 4-0, I thought, but that is the way soccer is."

York looked to take advantage first, as senior Cody Kliethermes carried the ball deep into Red Devils territory. His cross pass, however, was deflected, which ended the scoring threat.

"We have to be more aggressive in the box," Roy said. "We had a couple (chances) but we didn't have enough chances to score. We have to create more and get more aggressive in the box to do that."

A bad pass set up Hinsdale Central senior Taylor Cole with a scoring chance. Cole managed a pass through two York defenders, but it was ruled offside. A penalty on York just outside the box kept Hinsdale's drive alive.

Central senior Mike Oleferchik took the free kick, but sailed it over the cross bar. A few minutes later Hinsdale sophomore Mike Krohn carried the ball into York's corner. York senior Eric Lund and junior Tommy Madden did not allow the pass, but Krohn managed to draw a penalty to give the Red Devils a corner kick. The Devils opted to pass to sophomore Phillip Gutman, who centered the pass, and Central senior Andrew Worthington headed it in.

York responded with a free kick and a corner kick before the end of the half but was unable to convert. The half ended 0-1.

"We had a good first half," Roy said at the end of the half. "The second half we need to do a better job on that."

The play became more physical in the second half, but the score remained 0-1 for the first 20 minutes. Each team had opportunities to score but just could not convert.

York looked to tie the game on a play inside the box. Central junior goalkeeper Will Meyer came out of goal to make a play on the ball and collided with York senior Cody Kliethermes. Meyer made the save but was forced to come out of the game due to injury. The play had been ruled offside.

York had another corner attempt but was unable to tie the score. Later, Kliethermes made a centering pass but no one was there to finish it.

Hinsdale looked to have its second goal as a cross shot got past a diving Pierzchala before it hit off the opposite post. York was unable to clear the ball and the Red Devils kept the play alive.

The Devils drew a penalty inside the box, and junior Mitch Reavis placed the ball in the bottom left corner on the penalty kick for a 2-0 lead.

"We had a couple of individual mistakes where it cost us and they capitalized on that," Roy said.

York continued to push as they drew a corner kick. The corner kick was kicked over the goal to end the scoring threat.

With less than 12 minutes to play, senior Dylan Hund had the best scoring chance of the night for York. His shot was blocked but almost trickled over the goal line. With 7:33 left, the Red Devils extended their lead to 3-0 when junior Gareth Parsons' diving header found the back of the net. Less than a minute later, the Red Devils kicked in a rebound to expand the lead to 4-0.

"They did a great job coming back and putting us away," Roy said.

In addition to Meyer, several other players were injured during the game. Pierzchala suffered a head injury on the rebound goal, and Reavis left the game on a crutch with ice around his ankle.

York will be back in action on Oct. 7 at Proviso West.
