20-Year Old Injured When Car Slams Into Tree

The victim was thrown into a light pole and hospitalized in critical condition.

EVANSTON, IL - A 20-year-old Evanston resident was critically injured Sunday afternoon as part of a crash near Pitner Avenue and Nathaniel Place in which a driver caused a car to slam into a tree.

Police say the injured person was leaning into the window of the car, which was driven by a 19-year-old resident, when the car accelerated a struck a tree. The 20-year-old was thrown from the vehicle into a light pole as a result.

When police arrived, the driver was attempting to leave the scene, but was restrained by citizens in the area and then taken into custody as part of an investigation.

The victim is in critical condition at Presence Saint Francis Hospital.
