50 Trees To Be Planted In Evanston Parks By Volunteers

The Evanston Lighthouse Rotary Club's tree planting project aims to replace 3,500 trees that have been recently lost to disease.

EVANSTON, IL — The Evanston Lighthouse Rotary Club announced a citywide tree planting event will take place Saturday. At 10 a.m., Rotary Club members will arrive at five Evanston parks ready to plant 50 trees selected by Parks Department officials. The plantings will take place at Eggleston, Baker, Raymond, Smith and Butler parks, the club announced. Begun a year ago, the planting project aims to replace 3,500 trees in town that have been lost to disease.

The Oct. 13 event will be the third tree planting event for the Evanston Lighthouse Rotary Club, according to the group. Members planted 50 trees in the fall of 2017 and 100 more in spring 2018, when Northwestern University and the Celtic Knot Public House contributed trees and volunteers to the planting. A local Boy Scout troop and the Beacon Academy Roteract Club also joined in the event.

The group said some trees were purchased and planted in honor of loved ones, and the project is part of the club's continuing mission to contribute to the Evanston community.
