60-Year-Old Charged With Attempted Murder Over Evanston Stabbing

Cops: A knock on the door, then an acquaintance hit a man with a pillow case filled with canned goods and stabbed him in the neck.

EVANSTON, IL — A Chicago man stands accused of the attempted murder of an Evanston resident in connection with an stabbing incident last Tuesday in Evanston. Virgil L. Burgs, 60, of the 1200 block of North Massassoit Avenue in Chicago, was arrested and charged with home invasion and attempted first degree murder, according to Evanston police.

Police said they received a call that a person had been stabbed in a multi-unit apartment building on the 2300 block of Noyes Court shortly before 7 p.m. When they arrived, they found a bloodied 53-year-old Evanston resident who explained what had happened.

According to the man's account, he was at home when he heard a knock on the door. When he opened the door, an acquaintance, whom he identified as Burgs, immediately began to hit him with a pillow case filled with canned goods.

As the man tried to defend himself from the attack, Burgs pulled out a knife and stabbed him in the neck, shoulder and hand. He told the man he was going to kill him for saying bad things about him, according to Evanston police.

Police said Burgs then fled the scene and was taken into custody inside another unit in the same building shortly after police arrived.

After suffering knife wounds, the 53-year-old Evanston resident was taken to Evanston Hospital, where he was treated for his injuries and released.
