EVANSTON, IL — Fifteen projects across U.S. Rep. Jan Schakowsky's congressional district are in line to receive more than $26 million from the $1.7 trillion in government funding package approved by lawmakers last week.
“For years, we have seen many worthy projects in our community go underfunded," Schakowsky (D-Evanston) said in a statement. "Whether it be school programs, community centers, or infrastructure needs, public funding has come up short or has been non-existent."
Schakowsky is a senior chief deputy whip and an outgoing subcommittee chair in the House Energy and Commerce Committee. She is due to be sworn in to a 14th term in office next month.
"I am proud to announce, thanks to the passage of this spending package, I will be bringing home $26,239,331 for 15 vital projects throughout Illinois’ 9th Congressional District," Schakowsky said.
Schakowsky submitted each of the the following projects to the House Appropriations Committee for funding in the coming fiscal year.
"This will provide needed funding for our community," she added. "I will continue fighting every single day to ensure that all people in the 9th Congressional District have the resources they need and deserve."
The $1.7 trillion omnibus spending package — 4,155 pages composed of a dozen individual appropriations bills — includes $772.5 billion on domestic initiatives and $858 billion in military spending. The bill contains about $40 billion in emergency spending in the U.S., mostly for places hit by climate-related disasters, as well as $45 billion for the defense of Ukraine.
The legislation cleared the House Friday by a mostly party-line vote of 225-201, will fund government agencies through September. It had earlier passed the Senate by a vote of 68-29, and President Joe Biden pledged to sign it.
Congress is due to return Tuesday, Republicans will have a majority in the House of Representatives, and Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-San Francisco) is set to relinquish the gavel.
