GBS Runs Past Wildkits In CSL South Opener

Maybe another day of film study would have helped Evanston's defense this week.

But a shorter week of preparation left the Wildkit football team at the mercy of Glenbrook South's running game Thursday night at Lazier Field.

The Titans piled up 404 yards on the ground and handed Evanston a 33-9 defeat in the Central Suburban League South division opener. The Wildkits suffered their first loss, falling to 3-1 overall, while South improved to 2-2.

Evanston's difficulty distinguishing between the double-wing style of offense the Titans have used for decades --- dating back to when the current head coach's father used it as a staple when HE was leading the program --- and a two running back, one tight end set allowed the visitors to run wild.

Two Titans rushed for more than 100 yards including Jojo Wehbe, who carried 21 times for 187 yards and two touchdowns. Backup Josh Edelheit totaled 128 yards in 9 tries, adding a 51-yard TD burst.

"I don't think we competed well tonight," admitted ETHS head coach Miles Osei. "GBS has been in that system for a long time and they did a good job of executing it. I don't think we did the best job of being where we wanted to be, alignment-wise, against it.

"Against them, you have to identify when it's a double wing and when they have a tight end with two backs in there. You have to be able to understand what they're doing --- and we didn't. You have to be able to adjust quicker than we did."

Glenbrook South pounced on the hosts for two scores in the first quarter and never looked back. A bad center snap on a punt set the Titans up for their first touchdown, a 13-yard run by Jack Gonzalez.

On the next possession, the Titans marched 52 yards in just 7 plays and reached paydirt on a 14-yard TD pass from Xander Song to Gonzalez.

Evanston's defense stood firm until halftime and the Wildkits got on the board on a 56-yard pass from Aiden Payne to Justin Johnson, and a 30-yard field goal by Juan Gomez for a 13-9 halftime deficit.

But they couldn't get any closer, as both quarterbacks --- Payne and junior T.J. Gant --- threw interceptions in the second half and the Kits also fumbled away a kickoff return.

Evanston mustered just 45 yards rushing on the night. Payne completed 9-of-15 passes for 198 yards, a season high, but was limited to 5 yards rushing on 11 carries.
