No injuries have been reported, but officers have stepped up patrols around the center and nearby schools and are asking residents to share any information or anonymous tips.
2. Evanston-Skokie District 65 Proposes $20M In FY28 Cuts, Closing 2 More Schools (patch.com) — Families in Evanston and Skokie face the prospect of about $20 million in FY28 budget cuts and two more school closures as District 65 grapples with declining enrollment and rising costs. Interim Superintendent Eric Witherspoon says no final decisions are made yet, and upcoming board and community meetings will outline options and gather feedback.
3. Library Board plans 3.15% tax increase (evanstonnow.com) — Evanston residents could see a 3.15% increase in the library property tax levy next year, as the Library Board prepares its proposed 2027 budget. The plan slightly boosts operating funds and sharply raises the debt service levy, while overall spending is expected to decline after roof repairs, with a public hearing set for Oct. 21.
4. Chase bank shouldn't demolish its modernist Evanston branch (suntimes.com) — A modest but much-admired Chase branch at Green Bay and Central in Evanston may be demolished, despite local efforts to landmark the 1979 modernist building. Evanston's Historic Preservation Commission has delayed its decision 60 days, giving residents and preservationists more time to push for saving what some call a quietly exceptional neighborhood landmark.
5. Avenue of the Righteous relocation plan proposed (evanstonroundtable.com) — Evanston's Parks & Recreation Board is backing a plan to move the Avenue of the Righteous memorial to Bent Park if Civic Center redevelopment requires relocation, aiming to create a serene, accessible space. The board also approved a costly Philbrick Park playground renovation and reviewed a 2027–28 priority list for upgrades at several neighborhood parks.
