EVANSTON, IL —A Northwestern University student was found unconscious in the water near the school Wednesday morning.
Evanston police and firefighters responded to Northwestern University around 7 a.m. today after a 911 caller reported seeing a person in the water near 70 Arts Circle Drive.
Evanston Fire Department water rescue personnel pulled an unresponsive woman from the water near the university's southern lakefill area and performed CPR. She was taken ashore and then to a local hospital, where she was later pronounced dead.
Authorities identified the woman as a Northwestern student who was not from the Evanston area. The death remains under investigation.
Police said there is no danger to the Northwestern or Evanston communities.
Officials issued a public safety reminder about Lake Michigan conditions along the university shoreline. Hazard warnings and signs prohibiting swimming and fishing are posted along Northwestern University's lakefront property.
Evanston Police urged people to follow posted warnings, check lake conditions before approaching the water and follow instructions from city or university officials to stay out of the water and off break walls and rocks.
