More than 50 people honored children’s author Blue
Balliett when Book Worm Angels presented her with the 2012 Kermit Myers Award during a reception at the Lakeview Center in Gillson Park, 800 Gillson Park Drive in Wilmette, on Sunday, May 20.
In addition, Stephan Harden, principal of Cameron School at 1234 North Monticello in Chicago, received the Carolyn Quattrocki Award for his contributions to the advancement of recreational reading for children. Dedicated Book Worm Angel volunteers Sandy Perryman and Carol Johnson, both residents of Elmhurst, were named Angels of the Year. BWA Director Christine
Seidman chaired the event where Balliett autographed copies of her current books for the children and read excerpts from her new book, The Danger Box, for the crowd.
Kermit Myers, a successful entrepreneur who served as a volunteer teacher's aide at Richard Byrd Academy in Chicago's Cabrini Green neighborhood, established Book Worm Angels 12 years ago. The Kermit Myers
Achievement Award is presented each year to an individual, school or organization for extraordinary contributions to the advancement of recreational
reading by children. It was initiated in 2009 as an ongoing tribute to Myers, founder of Book Worm Angels. The Carolyn Quattrocki Award is given to an educator who has demonstrated superior performance in furthering literacy in children.
