Cammy Babiarz recently became one of the youngest members of the Kiwanis family. Cammy and her
mother, former Evanston resident Jackie Corrado Babiarz, came to the Kiwanis Club of Evanston to talk about Rett Syndrome, a non-hereditary,incurable disease which deprives mostly girls of their ability to walk, talk or use their hands.
Jackie explained to the club that Cammy was a normally developing 9 month old when Rett was discovered. Today she listens, understands and knows you are talking to her, but she cannot respond. The family is hoping to secure a handicap accessible van to transport her around more easily. Currently, Ms. Babiarz or her husband must
lift the 50 pound wheelchair several times a day to get Cammy into vehicles.

“The van would give us a better chance of seeing Cammy being able to control her disabilities, she is very brave and she is very aware of what she can and cannot do”, said her mother. “We want her to have a full life and the use of this van would be a major boost in that direction,” she added.

While visiting the club, Ms. Babiarz had another
surprise. The Lenten speaker for the day
was Father Greg of St.Mary’s Church. He
had officiated at the Babiarz’ wedding several years ago.
