Pistol Pauses Planned Purple Line Pot Party

Two teens agreed to smoke weed with a man they had met on the train before robbing him at gunpoint, police said.

EVANSTON, IL — Two teens robbed a man at gunpoint in Evanston after meeting him on the train and agreeing to smoke weed with him, police said. Shortly after 4:20 p.m. on Tuesday, Evanston police were dispatched to an alley in the 900 block of Davis Street for a report of a robbery. A 24-year-old Chicago man told officers he had been riding on a northbound Chicago Transit Authority train when he met and struck up a conversation with two young men, according to Evanston Police Cmdr. Joseph Dugan.

Police said the two teens, later identified as a 17-year-old Chicago resident and a 17-year-old Evanston resident, got off the train with the Chicago man and walked over to an alley near the Davis Street train station.

While in the alley, one of the teens allegedly brandished a handgun and threatened to shoot the 24-year-old. The pair of 17-year-olds took the man's cell phone, cigarettes, Ventra card and $48.51 in cash, according to police. Police said the apparently armed teen also slapped the man in the face. After arriving on scene, Evanston detectives found two young men in the area that matched the description provided by the man, according to Dugan.

Police said both teens were positively identified by the robbery victim. His stolen property and a BB gun were also allegedly found in the teens' possession.

Both teens have been charged with aggravated robbery as juveniles and taken to the Cook County Juvenile Temporary Detention Center. As a result, no other information can be provided about the incident, Dugan said.
