Beacon Academy Scholastic Bowl Team Competes at State
The Evanston-based high school sends its first team to an IHSA state competition today
Evanston, IL, March 16, 2018, --- Members of the Evanston-based Beacon Academy Scholastic Bowl team will compete in the IHSA state championship competition today in Peoria, becoming the first team in the school’s four-year history to compete in an IHSA state competition.
Scholastic Bowl competitions test five-person teams on their knowledge of literature, math, science, social studies, and the arts, as well as current events and entertainment. Beacon’s 10-member team defeated Roycemore School in a tie-breaker to advance to last weekend’s sectional competition where they defeated three other regional championship teams to advance to state.
“Watching our students compete and win is fun, but more meaningful is the culture of competition they have established. At every competition, at least one opposing coach has mentioned the joy and sportsmanship that our students show during their matches, regardless of whether they win or lose,” said Beacon Academy Scholastic Bowl Coach and Director of College Counseling, Joe Freeman.

Beacon will field a 6-member team at state, including senior James Hanafee, who was named to the Scholastic Bowl All-Sectional Team.
Beacon’s team is poised for success today. “Our players work collaboratively, compliment their opponents, and ask moderators for more information about a correct answer,” said Freeman. “These habits have allowed them to improve this season and have positioned them to compete for a state championship.”
