Bennison’s is Offering $3.14 Pies on 'Pi Day'

I bet you didn't know that today is Pi Day, a day to pause and reflect on the importance of math — and that super helpful mathematical constant.

And to help you with that reflection, participating bakeries in the Chicago area are offering pie specials. In Evanston, you can get $3.14 4-inch pies in four flavors, apple, cherry, boston cream and chocolate cream, at .

The Illinois Science Council, which organizes the pi/pie celebration, offers this primer for those whose math lessons are a bit foggy:

Pi, if you’ve forgotten the geometry lesson, is the ratio of a circle’s circumference to its diameter.  Pi is abbreviated to 3.14 but continues indefinitely.  To date, it has been calculated by computer to over 1.2 trillion digits.  Competitions exist for reciting the most digits by memory.  As the world’s most famous mathematical constant, Pi is important to many formulas used in mathematics, science, engineering and statistics.  March 14 also happens to be Albert Einstein’s birthday!
