Broken News Blogger is Evanston Business Owner

Bob Danon of The Danon Gallery on Central Street gives us his take on politics and more.

EVANSTON, IL - Shoppers, business owners and other community members of north Evanston know Bob Danon as someone who never shies away from his thoughts on local issues that affect the community.

As owner of The Danon Gallery in the “Central Street East” shopping district of the city, Danon has gone public with his advocation for more lighting in the area, on why bicyclists should always wear helmets and how people who work in small business districts should refrain from parking by the meters where shoppers would normally park.

But it’s not just the tight-knit community the surrounds Central Street that is getting a dose of his latest takes.
Danon has taken on the issues that surround the entire nation as the creator and author of BrokenNews.Press, a blog that touches on a number of national and world issues, with a special emphasis given in recent months to Donald Trump.

Danon has been writing for decades, once authoring a newspaper column on his experience as a single parent. His national political beliefs started evolving during the early days of the Barack Obama presidency and began turning to outlets like CNN and MSNBC for news.

“And everywhere you look.. It’s ‘breaking news’ here and ‘breaking news’ there. But it’s not all breaking news. Every story is not breaking news,” he said while introducing his blog, “Broken News.”

“It’s a slight at the ‘breaking news’ theme and I was able to secure the domain with the ‘.press’ rather than the ‘.com’.”

With the theme of ‘Integrity Does Matter,’ Danon publishes blog posts once or twice a week, drawing his conclusions “from everyday sources while I continue making an effort to dig still deeper.”

“No brain surgery here. I’m just an average, everyday kinda guy. I’m neither an academic, nor an intellectual, and I have no insider connections. I am, however, a bit of a news/politics junkie and I make a point of reading, watching and listening to the events of the day, as they are presented by the numerous and various media which seem to rule our daily lives.”

Recent posts have centered on Donald Trump, and before the election Trump and the other presidential candidates. Most recently, Danon wrote on how Trump being a “clown” is only a small portion of the threat that Trump poses when he takes over as president in a few days.

“I’ve tried to write as little about him as possible, but it’s hard not too,” Danon said of Trump.

The blog - which Danon says is “about 80-90 percent political” - mixes serious opinions with humor. Danon said he missed having the “deadline” feel that came when he was writing columns for Chicago news outlets like Chicago Parent and the Hyde Park Herald.

And this gives him the freedom to do it his way.

“The idea is that if you have something to say, then say it. That’s what I do whether it’s about bike helmets, the Cubs reversing the curse or politics,” said Danon. “I have a voice and I want it to be heard.”
