City Could Double Pay For Aldermen
A committee to discuss raises says a 100 percent increase wouldn't break the bank for the city.

EVANSTON, IL - A committee created to investigate the possibility of raising yearly salaries for members of the Evanston City Council says doubling the pay would be a viable possibility.
The current aldermanic yearly pay rate is $12,735 a year, but a member of the committee stated that raising that to $20,000 would only cost the city about $49,000 and doubling the rate to $25,000 would only cost $108,000, according to Evanston now.
Another member of the committee said that since the representatives generally spend 30 to 40 percent of their time on aldermanic duties and might earn anywhere from $80,000 to $100,000 a year with another full-time job, a raise is justified.

A previous study by Evanston Now showed that aldermen in Evanston already make far more than their counterparts in similar size towns in Illinois.
The committee will meet to discuss the issue again on Tuesday, April 19.
