Friday's event at the Dempster Street Dunkin Donuts benefits Special Olympic athletes from Evanston.

EVANSTON, IL — Evanston police officers can be spotted Friday atop the Dunkin' Donuts on Dempster as part of the Cop on a Rooftop event. The 16th annual event raises money to support the Law Enforcement Torch Run, a benefit for Special Olympics Illinois. Athletes from the Special Olympics, their families and representatives from area professional sports teams will be among the special guests on hand to show their support from 7 a.m. to noon. at the 1900 Dempster Street location.

Each visitor to a Cop on Top location on May 18 that makes a donation to the Torch Run will receive a coupon for a free donut. Donors who give $10 or more will receive a Law Enforcement Torch Run travel mug and a coupon for a free coffee, while various other items will be available at other donation levels. Events will be taking place across Illinois. There is a $720,000 statewide fundraising goal this year and nearly 300 participating locations.

"All monies raised at the Evanston Cop on Top Event go directly to the Special Olympic Athletes from Evanston," said Officer Heidi Bernhardt.
