2 in Custody Following Barricade Situation at Lake and Darrow

An adult and juvenile exited the residence without incident.

Two Evanston residents, one adult man and another juvenile male, are in custody following a brief barricade situation Wednesday near Lake Street and Dodge Avenue in Evanston.

Members of the Evanston Police Department’s Neighborhood Enforcement Team heard gunshots coming from Lake Street and Darrow Avenue while patrolling the area around 4:16 p.m. When they pulled up, they observed the two subjects run into a home in the 1800 block of Lake Street.

“As the detectives exited their squad, they could still smell gunpowder in the air and were informed by witnesses that the subjects that ran inside the residence were shooting at another group farther north on Darrow Avenue,” according to a police report.

After officers set up a perimeter at the residence, the two suspects exited without incident around 5:40 p.m. Police recovered a loaded .380 caliber handgun from the residence.

Evanston Police had updated residents via their Twitter feed, @EvanstonPD. Lake Street had been blocked off for about an hour, but the scene was “secure” as of 6 p.m.
