Council to Vote on Reorganization Tonight

A proposed ordinance on the table would possibly lead to the elimination of several city positions beginning in January.

The future of a number of jobs with the city of Evanston could be on the line tonight as the City Council is set to vote on a reorganization plan.

If approved, the ordinance would implement a planned consolidation of the city’s public works and utilities departments and anticipate future layoffs in response to the state’s budget crisis, according to Evanston Now.

No jobs in particular are being cut by the ordinance, which only reorganizes the department.

The ordinance says “a fundamental change in the city’s organizational structure is necessary” to meet the economic reality of a possible “multi-million dollar decrease” in revenue from the state.

Several full-time positions could be eliminated beginning in January. Suzette Robinson, former director of public works, has already been let go.
