As you may have noticed the demographics in the 5th ward have intermediately began to change. What was once the pride of middle class African Americans, has now become the degradation of the Evanston community. with multiple shootings, unsolved homicides and a multitude of vacant homes. Homes that were once proudly owned by Grand and Great Grand parents have either gone by way of foreclosures or the loss of the solid family structure. Many homes are now being purchased by Hispanic families. One resident i spoke with who wished to remain anonymous, stated they could remember when you knew everyone that lived on your block and the block over in either direction.
They also stated the lack of a viable Alderman in the area. They stated a community which at one point was self sustainable , with it's own hospital,(Community Hospital) it's own school (Foster school)and a variety of independently owned businesses. Kids use to stay out until the street lights came on ,then you knew to be in or in front of the house. Now days your afraid to let your child out because of the violence, back then you knew just about every officer on the police force because they were from or lived in the community.
Now you have officers transplanted from other departments trying to make a name for themselves. We always hear of the Great diversity of the Evanston Community but there seems to be an rapidly growing division. With selling of the community to private developers instead of reinvesting in the community. What the kids need are jobs or programs to keep them active. The questions we have to ask ourselves, where the cameras they wanted to line Dodge Ave and Church St. with, to get investors to invest in helping build a new Youth Job center and Y.O.U? Or was it to deter crime? If it was to deter crime , why was it stated to the public they wouldn't always be monitored? Another ploy for the gentrification of the 5th ward. In conclusion things are changing in the 5th ward due to lack of resident from the ward at City Council mtgs. to voice their opinion .Remember there is POWER in numbers.
