DUI Crackdown in Evanston Nets More Seat Belt Violators Than Drunk Drivers
A four-day crackdown on drunk driving in Evanston did not produce many arrests.

EVANSTON, IL - A four-day crackdown on drunk drivers in Evanston resulted in just one DUI arrest. Police announced Thursday that increased patrols would be implemented on St. Patrick's Day and the following weekend.
"The enforcement of these crackdowns is vital because too many people are not heeding the message - drunk driving is deadly and illegal," said Sgt. Tracy Williams of the Evanston Police Department.
In addition to the DUI arrest, police in Evanston handed out:
- 54 Seat belt violations
- 1 Failure to seat belt a child
- 2 Illegal transportation of open alcohol
- 32 Cellular phone violations
- 15 Speeding violations
- 6 No proof of auto insurance
- 1 Unlawful possession of Cannabis citation
- 1 Suspended drivers license
- 1 No valid drivers license
- 17 Other miscellaneous violations
