ETHS Alum Will Compete for Nigeria in Rio Olympics

Margaret Bamgbose, an All-American at Notre Dame, qualified for Team Nigeria in the 400m.

An Evanston Township High School alumni will compete in the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janiero.

Margaret Bamgbose, a runner at the University of Notre Dame, qualified in the 400m dash at the Nigerian Olympic Trials last week. As a dual citizen of the United States and Nigeria, Bamgbose will compete for Nigeria in the Olympics.

Bamgbose finished the 400m (about .24 miles) in 52.27 seconds on July 8 in Sapele, Delta State, according to Notre Dame Athletics. She won the bronze medal and secured Nigeria’s final Olympic berth in the event.

The 11-time All-American at Notre Dame was also part of a winning Nigerian 4x400 relay team that finished in 3:30.17 at the trials.

Bamgbose graduated from ETHS in 2012, capping off a legendary Track & Field prep career that included a championship in the 300m hurdles and a runner-up in the 200m dash. She was named all-state in several events in high school.

At Notre Dame, Bamgbose was the 2015 ACC Indoor 400 Meter Champion and received several other accolades as a student-athlete at the prominent school in South Bend, Indiana.
