ETHS Students To Spend Part of Summer in Guatemala

Fourteen were selected through rigorous process to be part of leadership program in partnership with Global Visionaries.

More than a dozen Evanston Township High School students will participate in a youth leadership program this summer that will include a two-week cultural immersion experience in Guatemala, according to the District’s website.

Organized by ETHS teachers, the program is in partnership with Global Visionaries - a non-profit organization that seeks to challenge and transform young people into socially and environmentally conscience global leaders.

A total of 14 students were selected through a rigorous application and scholarship process and will spend three days learning about Guatemalan culture and addressing topics of environmental and social justice locally prior to going on the two-week cultural immersion trip in July. During their time in Guatemala, the students will live and work alongside Guatemalan teens who also have a passion for community service and have been working on social and environmental justice issues in their community.

According to Rachel Gressel, ETHS World Languages/Bilingual Department Chair, ETHS plans to select twice as many students to participate in its Global Visionaries program next school year.

“The experiences have been life changing,” said Gressel who noted the success of the Global Visionaries program at public high schools similar in size and demographics as ETHS.
