
RACHLEFF RETURNS TO CONDUCT THE CPO IN THE ROMANTIC VIOLIN
Chicago, IL - On Sunday, May 20 at 7
p.m., Chicago Philharmonic Principal Conductor and Music Director Larry
Rachleff returns to Pick-Staiger to conduct the orchestra’s fourth and final concert
of the season - The Romantic Violin. The program features Antonín Dvořák’s entrancing Symphony No. 8 and Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky’s beautiful Violin
Concerto featuring Chicago Philharmonic Concertmaster David Perry.
The evening will start off with a
well-known showpiece for violin. Tchaikovsky
wrote his Violin Concerto in D major, Op. 35 in 1878. The piece is one of the most popular violin
concertos ever written. It is known for
being a very challenging piece to perform, requiring great technical skill.

After the intermission, the orchestra will
perform Dvořák Symphony No. 8 in G major, Op. 88, B. 163. Dvorak composed this piece in Bohemia in 1889
as a tribute to the Emperor Franz Joseph for his encouragement of the
arts. The piece premiered in Prague in
1890. Symphony No. 8 was inspired by Bohemian folk music which adds to
its cheerful quality.

Pick-Staiger Hall, one of the finest classical music venues in the Chicago

the Orchestra
Many of the 80 members of the Chicago
Philharmonic are drawn from Lyric Opera’s orchestra along with a cadre of
seasoned professional musicians who have performed together over many years
