ETHS presents seven plays in three nights

On May 31, June 1, and 2, Evanston Township High School will present a showcase of student theatrical talent—a weekend of short plays and one special event. Each night’s offerings will be different.

For the first time, the ETHS main-stage season will feature six one-act plays, all directed by students. On May 31, the roster includes “The Best Daddy” by Shel Silverstein, “The Rental” by Mark Harvey Levine, and “The Proposal” by Anton Chekov. The following night’s shows include “Welcome to the Moon” by John Patrick Shanley, “Post-Its” by Winnie Holtzman and Paul Dooley, and “Desire, Desire, Desire” by Christopher Durang.

On June 2, ETHS will perform “The Laramie Project: Ten Years Later,” an epilogue to a powerful play (“The Laramie Project”) that ETHS presented three years ago. The play, based on true events, examines the changes and lack of change, locally and nationally, following the brutal murder of a homosexual man, Matthew Shepard, in Laramie, Wyoming. The play features interviews with both murderers and community members, as well as Shepard’s mother, who has gone on to become a very powerful activist. Four students from the original ETHS production will reprise their roles and re-examine the changes in their characters. As this epilogue was just published, ETHS is possibly the first high school in the country to produce this play.
