The urban farming concept is spreading fast, but it's not new. There are those who remember the victory gardens that were planted during and after WWII in order to help supplement families' rationed food supplies. Families, groups and organizations pooled their resources and started these vegetable gardens so that the bounty could be shared amongst them. Not only was this considered patriotic, but these gardens helped to feed Americans during a time of sacrifice and need. People in cities grew vegetables in back yards, vacant lots and anywhere they could find space.
