Evanston Aldermen Want Rauner to Reconsider Cutting City Revenue

A resolution to draft a letter was passed unanimously on Monday.

The Evanston City Council acted unanimously in approving a resolution that urges Gov. Bruce Rauner and the Illinois General Assembly to protect funding for local governments on Monday.

This comes weeks after Rauner had indicated in his plan to save state dollars, revenues for municipalities like Evanston should be cut in half.

The Evanston Review reports that reduction for the city would be in the millions, and city officials would need to cut expenses by about 4 percent.

The resolution calls for a more “hand-in-hand” relationship between the state and local governments.

Municipalities serve as the ‘’front line providers of government services to citizens and these services include police and fire protection, parks, infrastructure, water, sewer and utility services and snow removal,” the resolution stated. “[Since 1969] Illinois municipalities have partnered with the state to fund core municipal services such as police, fire, public works, roads and sidewalks, and this funding partnership is made possible by revenue from the LGDF.”
