Evanston Businesses Fail Tobacco Compliance Checks

Two of 34 businesses checked this week sold tobacco products to people under 21.

Two Evanston businesses failed tobacco compliance checks conducted by the Evanston Police Department this week.

The Walgreen’s store at 900 Dodge Avenue and Shop Now Food and Grocery at 1942 Maple Avenue failed the checks and were cited accordingly. 32 other city businesses passed.

According to police, tobacco compliance checks - which in Evanston are set to ensure no one is selling the products to anyone under 21 - are held twice a year at various times.

People between 16 and 19 years of age were used for this week’s checks. Police supervised those individuals and received consent from their parents if they were minors.

All establishments cited under city ordinance will appear at administrative adjudication located at the Civic Center.
