Evanston Cop Saves Gunshot Victim With Tourniquet

Officer William Arzuaga saved the 17-year-old from extensive blood loss after shooting on Jackson Avenue.

EVANSTON, IL - An Evanston police officer saved the life of a 17-year-old boy who was shot in the leg on Jackson Avenue last month.

Officer William Arzuaga applied the tourniquet in an attempt to stop bleeding from the boy’s left leg shortly after arriving in the 1900 block of Jackson on April 21, according to a police news release.

Evanston Hospital personnel later determined the bullet severed the victim’s artery, and it would have caused extensive blood loss and possible surgery had Arzuaga not used the tourniquet immediately.
