Evanston Hasn’t Helped Deport an Immigrant in More Than a Decade

Police Department spokesperson says "limited contact" has been made between city and immigration officials.

EVANSTON, IL - It has been more than ten years since the Evanston Police Department worked with the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement to detain someone, according to a recent report in the Evanston Review.

Department spokesman Joe Dugan said the department has had limited contact with national immigration enforcement officials and that he hopes immigrants will not be hesitant to call for police assistance during the upcoming Donald Trump presidency.

The city has indicated plans to revisit a 2008 resolution that made Evanston a sanctuary city for immigrants, but Mayor Elizabeth Tisdahl has made it clear that the city will remain a sanctuary city despite threats from Trump that such cities could be punished when it comes to federal funding.
