SKOKIE, IL — An Evanston man faces a trio of felony charges after he was shot by a Skokie police officer in a convenience store parking lot late Monday night, police said.

Demetrius Bogan, 24, of the 1900 block of Dodge Avenue, was sitting inside a dark colored SUV in the parking lot of the 7-Eleven at 7950 Crawford Ave. when he was approached by officers who had been dispatched to a report of a suspicious person, according to police.

Police said Bogan threatened the officers with a pistol, and one officer fired a single round into Bogan's abdomen.

The officers were in uniform and in a marked squad car, according to Officer Eric Swaback. Swaback declined to say if Bogan was alone in the SUV at the time.

Bogan was taken to a local hospital for treatment, while the officers suffered unspecified minor injuries, police said in a news release Wednesday.

A search of the SUV turned up about 7 ounces of cannabis and a loaded 50-round magazine, according to police.

Prosecutors approved three felony charges against Bogan — aggravated unlawful use of a weapon for allegedly illegally possessing a gun, aggravated assault for allegedly pointing it at police and the manufacture or delivery of between 30 and 500 grams of cannabis.

The public integrity unit of the Illinois State Police is conducting its own investigation into the shooting, according to police. No information about the charges was immediately available from the Cook County State's Attorney's Office. No attorney information was immediately available for Bogan, who is due back in court on April 13.
