Evanston Obituary: Nancy Joan Wykes, 83

Nancy Joan Wykes died in Evanston Hospital on October 14, five days after her 83rd birthday. She was born to Roger Wykes, Jr. and Marjorie Malloy Wykes on October 9, 1932 in Grand Rapids, MI. Loving sister of Barbara Wykes Plampin; dear aunt of John J.W. Plampin and Christopher C.W. (Marta Siepsiak) Plampin; great aunt of Christopher Jan Plampin; cousin of Mallory Wykes Scott and Roger I. Wykes II. Ms. Wykes grew up and lived for many years in Cascade, MI. She graduated from Kemper Hall in Kenosha, WI and from Transylvania College in Lexington, KY. She held various jobs, among them in the cataloguing department of the University of Chicago Library. One of Ms. Wykes’ passions was architecture. She volunteered with historical societies in the Chicago area including the Charles Dawes house in Evanston and the Frank Lloyd Wright house in Oak Park. She performed restoration as well as fundraising activities. She taught Sunday school for several years at St. Michael’s Church in Cascade, MI, and was a member of the Cascade Historical Society. At the time of her death, she was working on a biography of her great uncle, the Prairie School architect, Vernon Watson. Ms. Wykes traveled widely in Europe, enjoyed reading writing, and music. While living with her nephew Christopher and his wife Marta, she helped take care of her grand-nephew, Christopher Jan, and the family’s golden retriever, Hector. She enjoyed the company of her friends Emily and Adam Lipowicz.

Funeral Service Saturday, October 17, 2015 1:00 p.m. at Christ Church, 784 Sheridan Rd. at Humboldt Ave., Winnetka, IL 60093.

Interment Saturday, October 24, 2015 10:30 a.m. (ET) at Cascade Township Cemetery, 7200 30th St, Grand Rapids, MI 49508. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Cascade Christian Church, 2829 Thornapple River Drive SE, Grand Rapids, MI 49546.
