Evanston Police Officer Featured in ESPN Video on Chicago Cubs Fans

Detective Ben Holliman describes what it's like wearing Cubs gear on the South Side of Chicago.

Ben Holliman’s ties to Evanston do not make it a surprise that he roots for the Cubs. Chicago’s North Side team is the clear favorite in its nearest north suburb.

But Holliman, 29-year-old member of the EPD’s tactical unit, is a resident of Chicago’s South Side. Which may be the one place in Illinois the Cubs’ success isn’t celebrated that much. Holliman describes the grief he gets while on that side of town but says he will always wear his Cubs gear no matter what.

“It’s like when Lady Gaga wore that meat dress and walked into a lion’s den,” Holliman said of donning Cubbie blue on the South Side. “That’s what it’s like being a Cubs fan on the South Side.”

Holliman often walks into work at the Evanston police station donning Cubs gear. The video shows clips of his White Sox-loving co-workers giving him a hard time for it.

“Where’s your Sox gear?” one co-worker asks Holliman in the video.

“Nah. Cubbies all the way,” he responded.

With the Cubs in the National League Championship Series and just three wins shy of their first World Series appearance in 71 years, Holliman says he is on “a high horse.”

“I’m looking forward to them bringing home the hardware,” he said.
