Evanston Reports Eight New Coronavirus Cases, City Total at 97

The city remains at one reported coronavirus-related death, but the number of cases continues to climb like other Illinois communities.

EVANSTON, IL — Like many communities across Illinois, Evanston continues to experience an uptick of confirmed coronavirus cases on a daily basis. On Thursday, state health officials announced that the city had reported eight new cases from Wednesday, taking the city's total number of cases to 97 and one death. The new count came on a day when the state reported 715 new cases, which took Illinois' confirmed caseload to 7,695.

Comparatively to nearby communities, Evanston's one confirmed coronavirus-related death is low at a time when Skokie has reported six deaths, including another on Thursday. In nearby Chicago, 192 new confirmed cases were announced on Thursday, taking the city's total to 3,279.

Among Evanston's 97 cases is NorthShore University HealthSystem Chief Executive Officer J.P. Gallagher, who informed his colleagues in a memo that he had tested positive for coronavirus last month but has since recovered. The 49-year-old Wilmette resident wrote in the memo that he began experiencing symptoms last month, beginning with a mild fever.
