Evanston Water Bureau Wins Gold-Level Water Ambassador Award
The Illinois Section American Water Works Association recognized Evanston for water outreach, education and public communication.
EVANSTON, IL — Evanston’s Water Production Bureau has received the Water Ambassador Award at the Gold level from the Illinois Section American Water Works Association, the city announced.
The award recognizes water utilities for public outreach, education and communication aimed at improving public understanding of the water industry and building trust.
According to the city, Evanston achieved the Gold level, which is the program’s highest tier. The city said the recognition reflects the department’s commitment to transparent, consistent and engaging communication with the community.

“I am proud of the work our Water Production Bureau staff does every day. We are fortunate to have employees who are deeply committed and truly invested in their roles", said Water Production Bureau Chief Darrell King. “This award reflects the team’s dedication to keeping the public informed and advancing meaningful education about our water system and operations”, he added.
The Illinois Section of the American Water Works Association sets four standards for the award, according to the city. They include elected official education, consumer education about the value of water, consumer education to increase public understanding of how water systems operate, and participation in industry-related events and celebrations.

The elected official education standard focuses on providing resources and information so local leaders understand water system operations, needs and priorities. The consumer education standards include highlighting the importance, cost and long-term value of safe and reliable water services, as well as increasing public awareness of how water systems function and the professionals who maintain them.
The fourth standard calls for participation in and promotion of events that recognize and celebrate the water industry and its contributions.
For residents, the award points to continued emphasis on public information about Evanston’s water system and operations.
