Feral Cats Could Be Used to Control Rat Problem in Evanston

City Council begins talk of setting up feral cat colonies as way to control rodents.

Aldermen discussed the possibility during a committee meeting Monday night, according to Evanston Now.

The idea first came up when it was learned that residents at the Sherman Garden co-op opted to set up a feral cat colony to deal with what is described as “a huge rat problem” there.

But there are a few obstacles to overcome if the city wants to implement that solution throughout the town.

First, city code bans feral cats from public parks, playgrounds and sidewalks. Second, the state health department is a proponent of sanitation and rodent-proof traps as top methods for rat control.
