Firefighters Resuscitate Pets Rescued From Burning Apartment

A fire in a multi-unit building closed both directions of Sheridan Road in Evanston during Tuesday evening's rush hour.

EVANSTON, IL — Firefighters rescued four pets from a burning apartment Tuesday, including a cat and a dog that had to be resuscitated. Sheridan Road was closed in both directions between Kedzie Street and South Boulevard in Evanston as fire crews extinguished a fire reported at 5:17 p.m. in the rear of a multi-unit courtyard building in the 600 block of Sheridan, authorities said.

Two cats and two dogs were found during a secondary search, and rescuers used specialized pet oxygen masks to resuscitate three of the four animals.

There were no injuries to residents or firefighters, according to fire officials. Police redirected drivers to use an alternate route during Tuesday evening's commute.

The cause remains under investigation by the fire protection bureau, and police assisted the resident who was displaced by the fire.
