Fire In Evanston Factory Foiled By Firefighters, Sprinklers

A working sprinkler system kept a fire at a West End manufacturing facility in check until fire crews arrived Friday afternoon.

EVANSTON, IL — A quick response from firefighters and working sprinklers saved a building at a industrial facility Friday, according to the Evanston Fire Department. At 2:11 p.m., crews were called to the 1900 block of Greenleaf Street for report of a structure fire. Firefighters arrived to find heavy smoke and a moderate level of fire on the second floor of a building housing a glass manufacturer.

When they entered, they noticed an activated sprinkler system was keeping the fire in check, and crews were able to quickly put out the fire. All employees were able to get out of the building before the arrival of the fire department, and there were no reported injuries.

The building suffered significant smoke and water damage. The cause of the fire remains under investigation, but there were no indications that it was caused by foul play, according to Division Chief Paul Polep.
