Former Negro League Player Will Get Key to the City

Ray Knox is one of only 60 former Negro League baseball players still around. The Evanston resident will get a key to the city on Monday.

EVANSTON, IL - The Evanston City Council will present a key to the city to Ray Knox, one of only 60 or so players from baseball’s Negro League still living, at the start of its 7:30 p.m. meeting on Monday, Feb. 8.

Knox was a catcher for the Chicago American Giants and the New Orleans Eagles, having begun his career in the league in 1949, two years after Jackie Robinson broke the color barrier in Major League Baseball.

Nicknamed “Boo Boy,” Knox tells the Ridgeville Park District in the YouTube clip below of how he earned the nickname.

Knox is an Evanston resident.
